Locavore is a social enterprise working to build a more sustainable local food system that is better for our economy, the environment, and our communities. We exist to make the money spent on food do more good, keeping value local and using food as a force for positive change.
Since 2011, we have been developing practical ideas and real world alternatives to the dominant food system. Over that time, we have opened grocery shops, built a market garden, established a veg box scheme, and helped thousands of people engage more deeply with where their food comes from and how it is produced.
Our work is rooted in action. We focus on solutions that can operate at scale while staying true to our values, proving that a better food system is not just an ideal but something that can function day to day.

We believe many of these challenges stem from the way the modern food system is structured. Large corporations dominate the market, prioritising profit and shareholder returns above people, producers, and the planet. In the UK, supermarket chains control the vast majority of grocery sales, and the impacts of that concentration of power are felt throughout farming, supply chains, and communities.
Our ambition is to grow and scale what we do so that we can operate in the same marketplace as large corporate food businesses, but with a very different purpose. We aim to show that food can be accessible and affordable while being produced and sold in ways that are fair, transparent, and socially responsible.
By reinvesting our profits back into our mission, we work to strengthen local food economies and support long term change.

We believe in fairness throughout the food system. That means fair prices for shoppers, farmers, and producers, and ways of producing food that respect people and the environment.
We believe in a low carbon food system that reduces food miles, avoids unnecessary processing, and limits artificial inputs. We prioritise soil health, clean water, and clean air as the foundations of good food.
We believe money can be used as a tool for positive change. By operating as a social enterprise we can keep money circulating locally and distribute value more fairly.
We believe in openness and honesty about food and its impacts. We aim for transparency, acknowledge when things are not perfect, and continually work to improve without making misleading claims.
We believe in the importance of great tasting food and the role it plays in health, wellbeing, and culture. Good food should be enjoyable, nourishing, and accessible to everyone.
